Fiji Airways announced that it will acquire two brand new Airbus A350-900 XWBs during a joint press conference held in Nadi with the carrier’s largest shareholder, the Fijian government. Upon delivery of the type, Fiji’s flag carrier will be the first airline in the South Pacific to operate aircraft as it aims to expand its widebody fleet. Dubai Aerospace Enterprise Capital will lease the next-generation aircraft to Fiji Airways, which currently operates an all-Airbus widebody fleet. The first of two is expected to be delivered in November 2019 and the second the following month. While the backlog for the A350 currently exceeds 600 aircraft, Fiji Airways and DAE were able to secure the production slots of two Hong Kong Airlines aircraft scheduled for delivery in the fourth quarter because the airline is in the process of downsizing its fleet as it experiences financial uncertainty. Truly a European aircraft manufacturer, Airbus has facilities in multiple countries across the European continent in addition to its main facility in Toulouse, France. One of those facilities is at Finkenwerder Airport, a private airfield near Hamburg, Germany, which assists in the production of Airbus aircraft. The airport is used exclusively by Airbus and features multiple ramp areas that seemingly extend into the adjacent Elbe where countless Airbus aircraft of all sizes can be seen.  Airbus even has its own control tower at the airport staffed by air traffic controllers. In the midst of its struggles to ensure its survival, Alitalia launched a new transatlantic route on Thursday connecting its hub at Rome’s Leonardo da Vinci – Fiumicino Airport to Washington Dulles International Airport. The new route will be operated five times weekly during the peak summer season, dropping to three times weekly during the winter season as determined by the International Air Transport Association (IATA), and be operated with a 256-seat Airbus A330-200 with 20 Magnifica business class, 17 premium economy and 219 economy seats. Washington represents the sixth destination in the U.S. served by Alitalia which already operates to New York, Boston, Miami, Chicago and Los Angeles.
